OSAC Registry Implementation: FAQs | NIST

The Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) for Forensic Science, established in 2014 by the US Department of Justice and NIST, aims to create consistent, high-quality standards across forensic science disciplines. The OSAC Forensic Science Standards Board adopted the OSAC Registry Implementation Plan in 2018, focusing on forensic service providers in the first year. As of May 2021, the OSAC Registry includes over 50 standards aligned with various forensic science disciplines.

The implementation of these standards is encouraged to improve consistency, accuracy, reliability, and productivity in forensic science operations. It aims to enhance the quality of expert testimony, reduce risks and errors in test results, and improve confidence in forensic science findings. Accredited forensic science laboratories implement applicable standards from the OSAC Registry and are assessed by accreditation bodies to ensure conformity. The success of the OSAC Registry Implementation Plan relies on collaboration across diverse stakeholders, including law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and standards development organizations (SDOs).
