Dr. Arden Bement of NIST opened the NNI Grand Challenge Workshop on Instrumentation and Metrology, highlighting the importance of collaboration between industry, government, academia, and international metrology institutes. The workshop aimed to develop a roadmap for advancing measurement and standards in nanotechnology, a field with significant economic potential but still facing challenges in translating research into real-world applications.
NIST plays a key role in supporting nanotechnology through measurement, standards, and research. The agency has invested nearly $47 million in R&D to address both short-term and long-term needs, including quantum computing and communications. The upcoming Advanced Measurement Laboratory (AML) and the Mid-Atlantic Nanometrology and Nanomanufacturing Alliance (MANNA) are part of NIST’s efforts to strengthen nanometrology and foster collaboration. The workshop outcomes will help guide future research and partnerships to bridge the gap between lab discoveries and commercial use.
