NIST provides calibration services for force-measuring instruments, including strain gage-based load cells and mechanical proving rings. The calibration process involves applying known forces and recording the sensed deformation. NIST offers two calibration options: using the customer’s readout device or NIST’s own readout instrumentation. The relative standard uncertainty of the voltage-ratio measurement is 0.0003%. Compression or tension calibrations are performed using deadweight machines with capacities ranging from 2,246 N to 4,448,222 N. The standard uncertainty of applied forces is 0.0005%, and all calibrations are traceable to the SI through a traceability chain.
