The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has launched a new program to advance networking and measurement sciences for the evolution from 5G to 6G wireless networks. The program focuses on developing consensus standards and best practices for core network architectures and end-to-end (E2E) network services.
Key components of the program include:
1. Investigating AI-native core network architectures that support AI/ML-based network functions
2. Developing E2E service quality assurance architectures and edge AI technologies
3. Enhancing network security, resilience, and automation capabilities
4. Establishing measurement metrics and tools for 5G and 6G core networks
5. Investigating industry applications like industrial control and autonomous vehicles
6. Developing an open-source 5G/6G core network testbed
The program aims to promote collaboration between industry, academia, and government to ensure the development of robust, secure, and efficient 6G networks that meet the needs of various industries.
