Hybrid SEMICON West 2022 | NIST

In a speech at Hybrid SEMICON West 2022, Laurie E. Locascio, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), outlined NIST’s role in advancing semiconductor research and development in the U.S. She emphasized NIST’s long-standing mission to support U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness through measurement science, standards, and technology. NIST has been working closely with the semiconductor industry for decades, addressing key measurement challenges and supporting the development of next-generation technologies. With the passage of the CHIPS for America Act, NIST is preparing to play a central role in restoring U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity and leading research efforts in advanced chip technologies.

The CHIPS Act includes $52 billion in funding over five years, with a significant portion allocated for research and development, workforce development, and financial incentives for semiconductor manufacturing. NIST, along with the Department of Commerce and other agencies, is working to implement the Act and ensure the U.S. remains competitive in the global semiconductor industry. NIST has already begun planning for the Act’s implementation, gathering input from industry stakeholders and organizing workshops to identify key measurement needs. As the Bipartisan Innovation Act moves closer to final passage, NIST is preparing to support the development of new semiconductor technologies and strengthen the resilience of the U.S. supply chain.
