NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is working on a project to address the challenges of cloud computing forensic science. Cloud computing allows for convenient, on-demand access to shared computing resources, but this shift in IT operations and control dynamics presents new challenges for forensic science.
NIST has established a public working group to research technology, standards, and measurement gaps in cloud forensics. The group aims to address the challenges faced by experts in cloud computing ecosystems and develop a roadmap to fill these gaps.
NIST is currently seeking public comments on Draft NIST IR 8006, which summarizes the research performed by the Cloud Computing Forensic Science Working Group and discusses the forensic challenges in cloud computing ecosystems. The goal is to initiate a dialogue on forensic science concerns and develop a deeper understanding of those concerns while identifying technologies and standards that can mitigate them.
