The Quantum Voltage Project at NIST is developing advanced quantum-based voltage standards using Josephson junctions. The project aims to create highly accurate instruments for disseminating primary voltage standards and calibrating measurement equipment.
Key developments include:
1. Programmable Josephson Voltage Standard (PJVS) system that realizes quantum-based DC voltages up to ±10V
2. Josephson Arbitrary Waveform Synthesizer (JAWS) system that generates precise audio-frequency waveforms up to 2V rms
3. RF-JAWS system under development for synthesizing high-frequency waveforms up to tens of GHz
These systems are being used to calibrate measurement equipment, develop new technologies, and support emerging 5G/6G communications and quantum information applications.
The project’s work is particularly relevant given the 2019 redefinition of the SI units, which has increased focus on quantum-based realizations of fundamental units like the volt.
