The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has established an Applied Physics Division to advance measurement science and technology in areas of critical importance to national priorities. The division focuses on key competencies such as radiometry, advanced communications, sensing, quantum measurements, quantitative imaging, spectroscopy, and laser safety. It operates a state-of-the-art precision imaging facility to characterize unique devices that improve measurement science, standards, and services. The division’s staff consists of world experts in laser metrology, quantum metrology, quantitative imaging, and photonic and magnetic applications. By focusing on a targeted set of technical challenges, the division aims to maximize its impact and benefit from collaborations with industry, government, and university stakeholders.
