About the Subcommittee on Standards (SOS) | NIST

The Subcommittee on Standards (SOS) is a key forum for senior federal officials to address critical standards-related issues in the United States. Established in 2010, the SOS works to support U.S. standards policy, improve coordination among federal agencies, and raise awareness of best practices in standards development and implementation.

The SOS is co-chaired by several key organizations, including the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, International Trade Administration, Office of the Secretary, Patent and Trademark Office, and National Institute of Standards and Technology. These organizations work together to facilitate both internal and external discussions on federal government engagement in standardization activities, particularly in areas of national priority.

The SOS aims to articulate the strengths of the U.S. approach to standards setting, both domestically and internationally, while promoting effective federal agency participation in standards processes. By improving coordination and awareness of best practices, the SOS seeks to support technology development, innovation, and the efficient meeting of procurement and regulatory needs.
