SBIR Success Story – Voxtel | NIST

Voxtel, Inc. has developed advanced avalanche photodiode (APD) detectors through a NIST SBIR program. These APDs are capable of photon counting in near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelengths, with applications in communications, microscopy, quantum cryptography, LIDAR, and astronomy.

Key technical features include:
– High sensitivity and speed in 0.9-1.6 micron range
– Linear and Geiger-mode operation
– Monolithically integrated low-noise CMOS readouts
– Improved temperature and voltage stability

The NIST SBIR program supported development from Phase I through Phase II, resulting in a product line of single photon sensitive APDs. Estimated future annual R&D and sales from this project are $4.6 million.
