What ITL Does | NIST

The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) at NIST focuses on developing IT measurements, testing, and standards to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness. ITL’s research program supports NIST’s mission through three major activities: fundamental research in mathematics, statistics, and IT; applied IT research and development; and standards development and technology transfer.

ITL has identified five priority areas to maximize the benefits of IT and metrology to society: cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, reliable computing, and future computing technologies. ITL works with industry and other agencies to develop IT standards through standards developing organizations (SDOs) and has been accredited by ANSI as a standards developer since 1984.
