The Katharine B. Gebbie Young Investigator Award, presented by the NIST chapter of Sigma Xi, honors early career researchers at NIST who have achieved significant research milestones. The award recognizes challenging, creative, and significant research accepted by an archival journal, performed by a NIST staff member or associate with no more than ten years of professional experience following receipt of their highest degree. The award winner, Alex Grutter, was recognized for his use of neutron reflectometry to advance our understanding of topological, ionic, multiferroic, and related magnetic nanomaterials. These materials have significant promise in applications such as low-power logic, nonvolatile memory, and quantum information processing. The research has the potential to revolutionize the field of materials science and has far-reaching implications for the development of new technologies.
