The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) offers a competitive postdoctoral research program in collaboration with the National Academies/National Research Council (NRC). The program provides opportunities for early-career scientists and engineers to conduct cutting-edge research in quantum science, artificial intelligence, environmental science, and other fields.
To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens who have received their Ph.D. within the last five years. Men born after December 31, 1959, must have registered with the Selective Service System or hold an exemption. Postdoctoral positions are temporary, excepted service appointments lasting up to two years with a current stipend equivalent to GS-11 step 1 in the Washington, D.C., area.
The application process involves identifying and contacting a prospective NIST adviser and research opportunity before submitting an application. Two application periods occur annually, with deadlines in February and August.
