Title: NIST Enhances Far-Infrared Spectrometer for Advanced Research
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has upgraded its Nicolet Magna 550 FTIR spectrometer to enable high-quality far-infrared spectral acquisition. Key modifications include a silicon-coated mylar beamsplitter and a DTGS room temperature detector with a transparent polyethylene window. This configuration allows the instrument to capture spectra in the range of 33 cm⁻¹ to 700 cm⁻¹ (1 THz to 21 THz), making it suitable for various research applications.
In a different setup, the enhanced spectrometer can perform step-scan mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging using InSb or MCT infrared array detectors. This capability enables detailed imaging of both microscopic and macroscopic biological samples, opening up new possibilities for nanoscale device characterization and spectroscopy studies. The upgraded instrument’s advanced spectral range and imaging capabilities position it as a valuable tool for researchers in these fields.
