The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded the Gold Medal to a team of researchers for their groundbreaking work in quantum current sensing. The team, led by Jason Underwood and including Albert Rigosi, Alireza Panna, Leon Chao, Dean Jarrett, Randolph Elmquist, Stephan Schlamminger, David Newell, and Darine El Haddad, has developed innovative quantum current sensors that have achieved the world’s most accurate measurements of the SI units for electric current and mass.
Their work surpasses the capabilities of conventional artifact standards and enables the dissemination of current and mass measurements with unprecedented accuracy. This achievement fulfills the vision of the electrical “metrology triangle,” where the primary standards for the ampere, volt, and ohm can be achieved within a single unified quantum framework.
