The National Institute of Standards and Technology Communications Technology Laboratory (NIST CTL) plays a crucial role in advancing communications technology through precise measurements, test protocols, and standards development. Established in 2014, CTL builds on a history dating back to the National Bureau of Standards’ work on radiofrequency measurements during World War II. Today, as the number of connected devices is expected to reach 25 billion by 2025, NIST CTL is addressing spectrum-sharing challenges through the National Advanced Spectrum and Communications Test Network (NASCTN). This collaboration aims to develop robust test processes and validated measurement data to increase access to the spectrum for both federal agencies and non-federal users. Looking ahead, CTL has outlined six roadmaps that will guide its research focus over the next five to seven years, addressing key challenges and driving innovation in communications technology.
