Commerce’s NIST and Montgomery County Public Schools Partner to Strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education | NIST

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have partnered to enhance STEM education over the next five years. The collaboration aims to provide MCPS students, teachers, and staff with innovative STEM programs and experiences, ultimately producing a better educated workforce and nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers.

The partnership will begin with a two-week pilot institute for approximately 20 MCPS middle school teachers at NIST’s Gaithersburg, Maryland headquarters. During the first week, teachers will learn from NIST scientists and engineers about various STEM subjects through lectures and laboratory sessions. In the second week, they will shadow NIST staff in the laboratory to gain hands-on experience and develop draft lesson plans.

This collaboration supports the President’s American Competitiveness Initiative, which seeks increased support for critical research and development efforts at NIST and other federal agencies. MCPS is the largest school system in Maryland, with approximately 138,000 students enrolled in 199 schools.
