Dehmer to Head NIST Physical Measurement Lab | NIST

Dr. Joseph L. Dehmer has been appointed as the new Director of the Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dehmer, a physicist with over 40 years of experience in federal science research and administration, will take office on April 22, 2013. He previously served as the Director of the Division of Physics and Senior Advisor for Strategic Planning at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Dehmer has extensive experience in scientific research and administration, having chaired or served on numerous committees for organizations such as the National Research Council and the U.S. Department of Energy. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has held research positions at Argonne National Laboratory and NIST.

In his new role, Dehmer expressed his excitement about returning to NIST and praised its technical capabilities, creative talent, and range of expertise within the PML. He looks forward to contributing to NIST’s mission and the benefits it brings to industry, commerce, and the American people. Dehmer succeeds Katharine Gebbie, who directed the PML since its inception in 1991.
