NIST’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program provides funding to small, high-tech businesses for research in areas aligned with NIST’s technical programs or utilizing NIST-patented technologies. The program aims to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by supporting market-ready technologies in areas like advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and quantum science. In 2020, NIST awarded over $4 million to 12 phase one and 8 phase two awardees. The 2021 SBIR notice of funding opportunity has recently opened, focusing on areas such as advanced communications, networks, and scientific data systems; advanced manufacturing and material measurements; cybersecurity and privacy; and quantum science and measurement dissemination.
