Gebbie, Physics Visionary and Mentor to Nobel Laureates, Dies at 84 | NIST

Katharine Blodgett Gebbie, a renowned physicist and former director of NIST’s Physical Measurement Laboratory, passed away at 84. Gebbie mentored four Nobel laureates during her 21-year tenure at NIST, where she advocated for diversity in STEM fields. NIST renamed its most advanced research building in Boulder after her in 2015. Gebbie was inspired by her aunt, Katharine Burr Blodgett, the first woman to earn a physics PhD from Cambridge University.
