NIST has opened three new X-ray beamlines at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s NSLS-II facility, expanding its capabilities for materials research. The beamlines provide X-rays at three different energy levels (hard, tender, soft) for X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy, allowing detailed analysis of material composition and structure.
These advanced capabilities will support research in various fields, including:
– Developing stronger, more recyclable plastics
– Creating more efficient catalytic converters and batteries
– Advancing aerospace materials for jet engines and rockets
– Progressing quantum computing, high-density data storage, and efficient data transmission
NIST has been collaborating with Brookhaven for nearly 40 years, with seven staff members stationed there. The new beamlines will support both institutions’ emerging materials research priorities.
