NIST and Google to Create New Supply of Chips for Researchers and Tech Startups | NIST

NIST and Google have partnered to create a new supply of specialized chips for researchers and tech startups. The collaboration aims to provide a domestic source of chips for measuring and testing advanced technologies like AI algorithms and quantum computing components.

The chips will be manufactured by SkyWater Technology and will feature open-source circuit designs, allowing academic and small business researchers to use them without restrictions or licensing fees. This will help lower costs and remove barriers for university and startup researchers.

The partnership will make available a bottom-layer chip with specialized structures for measuring and testing various components, including new memory devices, nanosensors, bioelectronics, and AI/quantum computing devices. NIST expects to design up to 40 different chips optimized for different applications.

The collaboration will facilitate innovation and collaboration across the research community by allowing open sharing of data and device designs. A virtual workshop hosted by NIST will provide information on the chip designs and their applications.
