NIST Seeks Partners for Quantum Key Escrow Hardware Development

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking partners to join a cooperative research consortium focused on developing advanced encryption technology for computer hardware. This initiative aims to improve telecommunications security while maintaining privacy, industrial competitiveness, and effective law enforcement capabilities.

The consortium will explore new approaches to key escrowing, a critical component of modern encryption systems. NIST will contribute personnel, equipment, and facilities to the project, but no direct funding will be provided. Members are expected to contribute materials, equipment, personnel, or funds to support the research efforts.

Several industry organizations have already expressed interest in participating. The research program is expected to last two to three years, with access to classified information anticipated for qualified participants. A current U.S. government secret clearance is required for participation.
