Laurie Locascio, director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, a prestigious honor for engineers. Locascio leads NIST’s efforts to advance technology, measurements, and standards in the U.S. through collaboration with industry, academia, and government. She is working to implement the CHIPS for America initiative, a $50 billion program to strengthen U.S. leadership in semiconductor research, development, and manufacturing. Locascio is also advancing NIST’s work in critical emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum information science, cybersecurity, biotechnology, energy, and advanced communications. Prior to her current role, Locascio served as vice president for research at the University of Maryland and worked at NIST for 31 years, starting as a research biomedical engineer and rising to lead the agency’s Material Measurement Laboratory.
