NIST-led research demonstrates advantages of quantum-enabled optical communications for the internet. The study shows that quantum-enhanced optical communications can transmit long messages with greater accuracy and efficiency compared to current optical communication methods. The most effective quantum-enabled modulation technique, hybrid frequency-phase shift keying (HFPSK), achieved the highest accuracy and efficiency in transmitting long messages. This research could help develop more efficient quantum-enabled optical communication systems and address the approaching “capacity crunch” in global networks.
