NIST Posts 51 Entries for New Hash Algorithm Competition | NIST

NIST has selected 51 candidates for a new cryptographic hash algorithm competition, with the goal of selecting a new SHA-3 standard by 2012. The competition received 64 submissions, with 51 deemed complete and proper. Three submitters have already conceded their algorithms are broken. The public is invited to comment on the entries, and submitters will present their algorithms at a conference in February. Two more conferences will be held in 2012 to narrow down the candidates and select a final winner. The first-round candidates have been posted on NIST’s Computer Security Resource Center website.
