NIST researchers have conducted an experiment that proves the existence of “spooky action at a distance” as predicted by quantum mechanics. The experiment, known as a Bell test, involved creating pairs of entangled photons and measuring their properties at two separate locations. By closing all three major loopholes that have previously plagued such experiments, the researchers were able to demonstrate that the correlations between the measured properties of the photons cannot be explained by local realistic theories, as Einstein believed. The results strongly support the quantum mechanical explanation of entanglement and rule out local realism as a viable explanation for the observed correlations. The experiment was conducted at NIST’s Boulder campus and involved researchers from several institutions and funding sources.
