The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Maryland have agreed to expand their research collaborations. The partnership aims to strengthen America’s leadership in science and technology through cooperative ventures in areas like nanometrology and nanomanufacturing. Specific mechanisms to foster joint activities include transportation between campuses, shared equipment and staff, and opportunities for staff to serve as adjunct faculty members. A new intellectual property model was introduced to protect proprietary information and facilitate commercialization of collaborative projects. NIST, a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, develops and promotes measurement, standards, and technology to enhance productivity and improve quality of life. The University of Maryland, as the state’s flagship university, advances knowledge and nourishes an intellectual climate in various academic disciplines.
