NIST’s demonstrations of Einstein’s theories of relativity were highlighted as one of the top science breakthroughs of 2010. The experiments, published in Science, showed that time passes faster about 1 foot higher and slows down at speeds comparable to about 20 miles per hour. This work was featured in Physics World, ScienceNOW, and Science News.
Additionally, a NIST computer pioneer made the Science News list of top technology news in 2010. The researcher, who created the first digital image while working at NIST in 1957, recently wrote a program that reshapes the grains of these images. This work was also featured in Science News.
Finally, NIST’s “racetrack” ion trap was selected as one of the most amazing science images of 2010 by Popular Science. The device, which brings us closer to building quantum computers, was described in a NIST news article.
