The Joint Institute for Metrology in Biology (JIMB), a collaboration between NIST and Stanford University, has relocated to SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Established in 2014, JIMB focuses on developing precise measurement standards and reference materials for molecular and cellular biology. Their work includes creating benchmarks for next-generation DNA sequencers and a reference material for messenger RNA, which helps ensure reproducible measurements of gene activity across laboratories. This collaboration between NIST, SLAC, Stanford, and industry aims to enhance economic security and improve quality of life by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in biotechnology. The partnership enables researchers to share results with greater confidence and accelerate progress in this rapidly evolving field, which is crucial for the nation’s future.
