O’Brian Named Director of NIST Boulder Laboratories | NIST

Thomas R. O’Brian has been named the new director of the NIST Boulder Laboratories. Previously, he was the chief of the Time and Frequency Division at NIST. In his new role, he will oversee the operations of the Boulder labs, which employ around 400 scientists, engineers, and support staff. The labs conduct research in a variety of fields, including time and frequency standards, quantum physics, materials science, and more, and work closely with industry, government agencies, and universities.

O’Brian has a background in experimental atomic physics and has spent over 30 years at NIST, starting as a postdoctoral fellow. His recent research focused on precision measurements using synchrotron radiation. With his new appointment, he will lead the Boulder labs in continuing their important work in measurement science and technological innovation.
