The International System of Units (SI) is set to undergo significant changes with the approval by the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) to redefine four of the seven base units using fixed values of natural constants. This will improve consistency and accuracy worldwide, simplify unit definitions, and reduce dependence on physical artifacts like the kilogram prototype. The kilogram, ampere, kelvin, and mole will be redefined based on the Planck constant, elementary charge, Boltzmann constant, and Avogadro constant respectively. While the implementation requires further technical work and uncertainty reductions, the changes promise benefits for scientists, engineers, industry, and commerce.
