Spotlight: Connecting the Apples and Oranges of Quantum Computing | NIST

NIST researchers are working on a solution to connect superconducting quantum circuits with optical fiber networks, which use different types of signals. The key innovation is a transducer that converts microwave signals from superconducting systems into optical signals suitable for fiber networks. This is achieved through a thin sheet of tightly stretched silicon nitride that controls the rate of mechanical vibrations, acting as a go-between to convert microwave signals to optical signals. The research, funded by NIST and other organizations, could enable more efficient quantum computing networks in the future.
