Two new advanced laboratories, the Precision Measurement Laboratory (PML) at NIST Boulder and the X-Wing at JILA, have opened to support cutting-edge research in areas like atomic clocks, quantum computing, and nanotechnology. The PML, which houses NIST’s best-known experiments and technologies, was officially opened by NIST Director Patrick Gallagher. The new facilities are a significant upgrade from the original 1950s and 1960s buildings, with capabilities for tightly controlling environmental conditions and micro- and nanofabrication of custom research devices. The PML and X-Wing are designed to support NIST’s role in defining and implementing measurement systems, while JILA, a joint venture of NIST and CU Boulder, has served as a model for successful university/government partnerships.
