NIST Proposes to Withdraw 2009 Digital Signature Standard

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has proposed to withdraw its 2009 publication, NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-106, which outlines a method for creating digital signatures using randomized hashing. The decision comes after a review process initiated in January 2022 to assess the publication’s relevance in the field of digital signatures.

NIST received no public comments during the comment period, which ended on November 18, 2022. As a result, the agency has decided to withdraw the publication effective immediately. This move is part of NIST’s ongoing efforts to maintain and update its publications to reflect the current state of technology and standards in cryptography and digital signatures.

The review process and rationale for withdrawing SP 800-106 are available on NIST’s Crypto Publication Review Project website.
