Withdrawal of NIST Special Publication 800-107 Revision 1 | NIST

NIST has decided to withdraw Special Publication 800-107 Revision 1, a document that provides recommendations for using approved hash algorithms in various applications. The decision comes after NIST determined that the publication’s requirements have been superseded by more detailed recommendations in other publications, such as SP 800-90A/B/C and SP 800-131A.

To keep the specific use requirements for hash functions in their most relevant publications, NIST will move the supplementary material from SP 800-107 Rev. 1 to a new Implementation Guidance (IG) developed by the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP). Once the new IG is published, NIST will officially withdraw SP 800-107 Rev. 1.

The withdrawal of SP 800-107 Rev. 1 is part of NIST’s ongoing effort to streamline and update its cryptographic standards to ensure they remain relevant and effective in protecting sensitive information.
