New IEC/ISO Joint Technical Committee on Quantum Technologies—Inviting Participants for the U.S. National Committee Technical Advisory Group | NIST

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have established a new Joint Technical Committee (JTC) focused on quantum technologies. This committee, managed by the British Standards Institution (BSI) as Secretariat and chaired by a representative of the Republic of Korea, aims to develop standards and guidelines for quantum computing, communication, and cryptography.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has selected the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to administer the U.S. National Committee (USNC) Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for this new JTC. NIST is inviting U.S. parties interested in engaging with the committee to participate in leading technical working groups or serving as technical advisors.

The first ISO-IEC/JTC-3 Plenary meeting is scheduled for late May in Seoul, Republic of Korea. During this meeting, the overall structure of the committee, including leadership and technical foci of working groups and/or subcommittees, will be discussed. It is essential that the U.S. comes to a consensus recommendation of overall structure and priorities and is prepared to represent this, while also proposing or volunteering for specific leadership opportunities.

The IEC/ISO Joint Technical Committee on Quantum Technologies will focus on developing standards and guidelines for quantum technologies, including quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum cryptography. The committee will also address the development of standards for quantum-enabled systems and the application of quantum technologies in various industries. The scope of the committee will be further refined and expanded as needed to ensure that it remains relevant and effective in addressing the needs of the quantum technology community.
