Dr. S. Shyam Sunder is the Acting Associate Director of Laboratory Programs at NIST, where he oversees the strategic direction and operations of NIST’s scientific and technical programs. His role involves promoting U.S. innovation in key areas like quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors. Prior to this position, he led efforts related to safety improvements at NIST and played a key role in shaping the U.S. semiconductor industry through the CHIPS for America Act.
Dr. Sunder has held various leadership roles at NIST and the Department of Commerce, including Senior Science Advisor and director of several research laboratories. He has contributed to major initiatives such as improving cybersecurity, advancing technology transfer, and responding to national challenges like the 9/11 World Trade Center investigation. With a background in engineering and academia, he has also served on numerous national and international advisory boards and received prestigious awards for his leadership and contributions to science and technology.
