NIST has been a leader in this field since the 1990s, developing quantum computing components and standards. Their research includes quantum logic gates, single-photon detectors, and cryogenics. NIST has also supported the quantum industry through early scientific meetings and the Quantum Economic Development Consortium. With the National Quantum Initiative, NIST now leads a whole-of-government quantum science program and is developing post-quantum cryptography to protect data from future quantum threats.
