The Standard Reference Photometer (SRP) Program is a collaborative effort between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop and deploy a network of identical ozone reference instruments. The program, initiated in the early 1980s, has successfully deployed 38 SRPs across the United States, with two maintained by NIST as primary and backup/traveling standards.
The SRP network has expanded internationally, with instruments maintained in fifteen countries and the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in France. NIST and the BIPM are currently collaborating to transfer international responsibility for ozone measurements to the BIPM, with the first stage involving the delivery of two SRPs to the BIPM in 2002 and the construction of two additional instruments in 2003.
NIST will continue providing service and recertification for existing SRP owners and developing new SRPs for National Metrology Institutes requiring instruments to anchor their national ozone measurement networks. The current price quotes and delivery schedules can be obtained from James Norris at james.norris@nist.gov. NIST also offers a fourth-generation control program for the SRP, which includes new software to accommodate the transition from ISA to PCI bus systems in modern computers. New software versions are available for download.
