The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking public input on a draft Implementation Roadmap for the USG National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technologies (CET). The roadmap outlines actions and outcomes to increase USG investment in pre-standards development for CETs, broaden participation in standards development, grow a CET standards-savvy workforce, and ensure inclusive and integrity standards development.
The draft roadmap supports the USG’s priorities for CET standards development and complements the U.S. Standards Strategy published by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). NIST requests public review and comments on the draft roadmap, with a submission deadline of July 12, 2024. The roadmap is intended to guide USG actions and requires extensive coordination and engagement with stakeholders.
The USG National Standards Strategy for CET was released in May 2023 by the Biden-Harris Administration to strengthen the US foundation for safeguarding American consumers’ technology and maintaining U.S. leadership and competitiveness in international standards development. The strategy is supported by the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, which codifies NIST’s role as a convener, leader, and federal coordinator for international standards and provides a blueprint for investments in pre-standardization research.
