Imaging Complex Domain Wall Structures in Magnetic Nanostripes | NIST

Researchers at NIST and MIT have developed a new imaging technique using scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis (SEMPA) to visualize complex magnetic structures in nanowires. This method allows direct comparison of magnetic domain walls with simulations, which is crucial for developing advanced data storage and logic technologies.

The study revealed that multiple 180° domain walls can be injected into nanowires, where they either annihilate or combine to form complex 360° walls. These 360° walls exhibit unique magnetic properties that could enable new magneto-electronic applications, such as manipulating bits using localized magnetic fields in magnetic logic circuits.

The research provides valuable insights into the behavior of domain walls in nanowire memories and opens up possibilities for novel applications using 360° domain walls in magnetic logic devices.
