NIST Launches Consortium to Support Development of Quantum Industry | NIST

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has formed a new consortium with SRI International to advance quantum technologies. The Quantum Economic Development Consortium (QEDC) aims to expand U.S. leadership in quantum computing, communications, and sensing. The consortium will align resources and research efforts between federal, academic, and industry partners to ensure America remains at the forefront of quantum innovation.

The QEDC will focus on precompetitive R&D such as quantum device design and prototyping, while enabling access to quantum engineering capabilities. NIST and SRI plan to announce workshops addressing the consortium’s structure, governance, and major R&D areas in the coming months. The initiative follows the administration’s National Strategic Overview for Quantum Information Science released in September 2018.
