NIST has released an updated guide for federal agencies on transitioning to stronger cryptographic algorithms and key lengths to protect sensitive information. The new Special Publication (SP) 800-131A Revision 2 provides a strategy and schedule for retiring the use of the Triple Data Encryption Algorithm (TDEA) and transitioning to more secure methods.
The transition is necessary to address the growing threat from quantum computers, which could potentially break current cryptographic algorithms. By retiring TDEA and adopting stronger algorithms, federal agencies can ensure the continued security of sensitive but unclassified information against both classical and quantum computing threats.
