Scientists Report First Observation of an “Atomic Air Force” | NIST

Scientists at NIST and CU-Boulder have observed atoms flying in formation for the first time, creating a “cubic” structure. The strontium atoms were cooled to near absolute zero and manipulated with precision laser pulses. This phenomenon occurs because strontium’s unique electronic properties allow it to efficiently absorb laser energy at specific wavelengths. The discovery could lead to more accurate atomic clocks based on optical frequencies, potentially 100 times more precise than current cesium-based clocks.
