Lightweight Cryptography (LWC) Standardization: Round 1 Candidates Announced | NIST

NIST has announced the Round 1 candidates for its Lightweight Cryptography (LWC) standardization project. The project aims to develop cryptographic algorithms that are secure and efficient for resource-constrained devices.

Fifty-six submissions were accepted as complete and proper from the initial 69 received. The public is invited to provide feedback on the candidates through the NIST website. Comments are due by August 1, 2019, but will be accepted beyond that date.

NIST will review the feedback and evaluate the cryptographic strengths, weaknesses, implementation costs, and performance of the algorithms. This will help determine which candidates proceed to Round 2 of the standardization process. The goal is to develop LWC standards that can be widely adopted for secure communication in IoT devices and other constrained environments.
