The John Stewart Bell Prize, established in 2009, recognizes significant contributions to the foundations of quantum mechanics and their applications. The award, managed by the University of Toronto Centre for Quantum Information and Quantum Control, aims to highlight both fundamental research and potential applications in quantum mechanics.
A landmark experiment by Sae Woo Nam’s team at NIST has put to rest an 80-year debate about the nature of quantum reality. The experiment, conducted in 2015, was the first “loophole-free” Bell test, providing conclusive evidence for quantum entanglement. This achievement, along with separate results from teams in the Netherlands and Austria, brought the long-standing question about entanglement to an unequivocal conclusion.
