Dr. Kristan Corwin is a distinguished physicist and researcher who has made significant contributions to the fields of quantum metrology, nonlinear optics, and laser systems. She currently serves as the chief of the Applied Physics Division at NIST’s Physical Measurement Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado.
Corwin’s academic journey began with a B.S. in Physics from SUNY Buffalo in 1993, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado under the guidance of Nobel laureate Carl Wieman. Her research interests focus on developing novel laser systems and exploring the properties of light using techniques such as laser trapping and cooling.
Throughout her career, Corwin has held various positions, including Associate Dean for Research at Kansas State University and a visiting fellow at JILA and NIST. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the APS Five Sigma Physicist Award in 2019. Her work has led to several patents and over 60 peer-reviewed publications, demonstrating her significant impact on the field of quantum metrology and laser science.
