NIST Seeks Project Proposals For 1996 Precision Measurement Grants | NIST

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is currently accepting project proposals for two research grants in the field of precision measurement and fundamental constants for fiscal year 1996. The grants, worth $50,000 for one year, may be renewed for up to two additional years, for a total of $150,000.

Prospective candidates must submit pre-proposal summaries, biographical information, and a list of most important publications by February 1, 1995. Four to eight candidates will be chosen by March 24, 1995, based on this material, and asked to submit more complete proposals. The final selections will be made by August 15, 1995.

NIST Precision Measurement Grants are awarded each year to scientists in academic institutions for work related to determining values for fundamental constants, exploring physical phenomena, or developing new fundamental measurement methods. To date, 56 grants have been awarded in areas such as precision spectroscopy, atomic collision processes, precise timing of millisecond pulsars, and the redetermination of constants like the gas constant and Rydberg constant.

Proposals are evaluated based on the importance of the research, its relation to improvements in basic measurement methodologies, measurement units, or physical standards, feasibility, and past accomplishments of the applicant.

For further information, contact Dr. Barry N. Taylor, chairman of the NIST Precision Measurement Grants Committee, at the address provided or call (301) 975-4220. Prospective applicants should contact Dr. Taylor before preparing their pre-proposals.
