NIST, established in 1901, has been providing critically evaluated data for the scientific community for over a century. The Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data (JPCRD), founded by NIST in 1972, provides reliable data on the physical and chemical properties of matter. NIST’s data programs support industries in sectors like energy, pharmaceuticals, materials science, and environmental protection.
In response to the White House’s open data policies in 2013, NIST established the Office of Data and Informatics to promote best practices and a research data infrastructure. The office aims to treat data as a first-class research object, recognizing its importance alongside traditional publications. NIST data products and critical evaluation methods are available at https://www.nist.gov/srd.
The authors, H.G. Semerjian and D.R. Burgess, describe NIST’s evolution, accomplishments, and continuing efforts to provide essential data for technological advancement and scientific research. Their article celebrates 50 years of the JPCRD and looks forward to further progress in data management and recognition.
